003 Akureyri

Akureyri is Iceland's second largest city. We had two days there and unfortunately the first day was very wet and windy. On the second day we drove to Goðafoss Waterfall, Aldeyjarfoss Waterfalls, Laufás turf houses and drove up the coast to Hauganes.

We departed Akureyri at 6:30am so we could arrive at Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls before the crowds arrived. We also visited Leirhnjukur geothermal area, Viti Crater and Námaskarð – Hverir geothermal area.

005 Myvatn

005 Myvatn

We had beautiful sunny days to explore Lake Myvatn. The lake area is world known for its rich flora and fauna, largely stemming from the fact that the lake is pretty shallow.

It was a 6am start as we headed to see the puffins at Borgarfjordur Eystri puffin colony where about 10,000 pairs nest every summer. The puffins were so close and it was a beautiful sunny morning. We then headed to Hofn where it was very windy along the coast.

007 Hofn to Vik

On our way to Vik we visited Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Diamond beach, Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar Seastacks. It ended up being a very windy day and we unfortunately lost many of our photos when the camera sd card failed.

008 Vik to Golden Circle

008 Vik to Golden Circle

We had wet weather during our time in the Golden Circle and visibility was not good. We also found locations here to be a lot more crowded being on a popular tourist route.

009 Reykjavik

009 Reykjavik

Reykjavik is the capital and largest city of Iceland. We explored downtown Reykjavik which has many street art murals and colourful houses. The Reykjavik City Pond, locally known as Tjörnin, has over forty different bird species and was designed to attract bird life to the centre of the city.
